In 2011, AAUW Pendleton Branch began a 3-year financial commitment to support the education of young string players through Oregon East Symphony’s music academy known as Playing for Keeps. The Playing for Keeps project provides comprehensive musical education to pre-school through high school age students. Small beginner classes, after school classes for elementary students taught by experienced teachers and high school mentors, two preparatory orchestras, and the semi-professional Oregon East Symphony are some of the innovative programming available to young people from every socio-economic background in the area. In addition, the project provides scholarship private lessons and instrument loans as needed, Young Artist competitions, and free tickets to OES concert performances.
The strong support from AAUW Pendleton Branch has enabled the Playing for Keeps project to grow and strengthen, resulting in one of the few comprehensive, classical music education programs in the state.
